A smoke alarm
Scripture
"Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!" Luke 21:27-28 (NLT)
Do you have a smoke alarm in your house? I hope so! These amazing little devices are like guardian angels on your ceiling. In the event of a fire, a smoke alarm could save your life and the lives of your family by providing a warning that gives you precious time to escape safely. Smoke alarms don't cost very much, and they're pretty easy for adults to install. They're one of the best safety investments your family can make to protect everyone you love and your home.

Upper Elementary object lessons are designed for 10-12 year olds. They offer an expanded version of the sermon with deeper explanations, discussion questions, real-world connections, and more challenging concepts. Here's something really important about smoke alarms that some people don't think about - they're only as good as the battery inside them. Think about your favorite video game controller or toy. What happens when the batteries die? It stops working, right? The same thing happens with smoke alarms. If the battery loses its power, the smoke alarm becomes just a useless piece of plastic on the ceiling. It won't beep, it won't warn you, and it won't save your life. That's why smart families check their smoke alarm batteries at least once a year - many do it when we change our clocks for daylight saving time so they remember.
Have you ever been at home when someone was cooking and burned something - maybe toast or popcorn - and suddenly the smoke alarm started beeping really loudly? It might have scared you or been annoying, but guess what? That's actually fantastic news! It means your smoke alarm is doing its job perfectly. It detected smoke and warned everyone in the house. Unfortunately, some people get so used to these "false alarms" that they start ignoring the sound, or even worse, they take the batteries out or turn off the alarm because they're tired of hearing it. But imagine what would happen if there was a real fire and the alarm couldn't warn them - that would be a disaster!
If your family doesn't have smoke alarms, I hope you'll talk to your parents about getting them. If you do have them, help remind your family to check that they're working properly. You could even make it your special job to remind everyone when it's time to test the alarms!
Now here's where this connects to something even more important than fire safety - it connects to Jesus and our spiritual lives. Just like we need to make sure our smoke alarms are ready to protect us from fires, Jesus tells us that we need to be spiritually ready for when He returns to earth. The Bible teaches us that Jesus will come back someday, but we don't know exactly when that will happen. It could be tomorrow, next year, or many years from now. Since we don't know the timing, we need to stay spiritually prepared at all times.
How do we keep our spiritual "batteries" charged and ready? Just like a smoke alarm needs good batteries to work, our faith needs regular "charging" through worship at church, reading and studying the Bible, praying regularly, and living the way Jesus taught us to live. When we do these things consistently, we're keeping our spiritual lives strong and ready.
Throughout history, people have sometimes claimed they knew exactly when Jesus would return. They've picked specific dates and gotten people all excited or worried. But then those dates come and go, and Jesus doesn't return. After hearing several of these false predictions, some people start thinking, "Maybe Jesus isn't really coming back at all." But that's like ignoring your smoke alarm because it gave a few false alarms - it's dangerous thinking!
Jesus himself gave us clear instructions about this. He said, "Keep alert at all times. Pray that you will be strong. Don't let that day catch you by surprise." Notice He didn't say "figure out the exact date" - He said stay alert and ready. Jesus might return during your lifetime, or He might not return for many more generations. But whenever that day comes, don't you want to be ready? Don't you want to be living in a way that shows you love Him and are excited to see Him?
Think about it this way: If you knew your best friend was coming to visit you sometime this month, but you didn't know which day, how would you prepare? You'd probably keep your room clean, make sure you had fun activities planned, and stay excited about their visit. That's how we should live while waiting for Jesus - always ready, always excited, and always living in a way that honors Him.
