Scripture

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." Luke 3:21-22 (NIV)

January is a new year! That means everything is brand new and exciting! Just like when you get a new toy or wear new clothes!

Do you know what Jesus did when he was getting ready to start helping people? He got baptized! Baptism is like taking a very special bath that shows God we love him.

When Jesus got baptized, something amazing happened! God's Spirit came down like a pretty white dove - whoosh! - and landed right on Jesus. And then God said, "Jesus, you are my son! I love you SO much!" God was so happy!

After Jesus got baptized, he started doing amazing things! He helped sick people feel better. He helped hungry people get food. He was so kind and loving to everyone!

When we get baptized, it's like getting a fresh start too! It's like when mommy gives you a bath and you're all clean and fresh. God gives us new beginnings!

God loves you SO much, just like he loves Jesus! When you try to be kind and loving like Jesus, God smiles big!

New beginnings are wonderful! God gives us chances to start fresh every day. Let's try to be like Jesus - kind, loving, and helpful!

Dear God, thank you for loving us! Thank you for new beginnings! Help us be kind like Jesus every day! Amen!
