Scripture

What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16:26 [NIV]

Do you like toys? Today we're going to hear about a little boy named Ben and his special toy!

Ben was a little boy, just like you! One day, Ben got some money. Lots of pennies! He put them in his pockets. Jingle, jingle, jingle!

Ben walked to the toy store. On his way, he saw another boy. The boy had a whistle. Tweet, tweet! Ben heard the whistle. He loved that sound! Tweet, tweet!

Ben said, "I want that whistle! I'll give you ALL my money!" So Ben gave the boy all his pennies for the whistle. All of them!

Ben went home with his new whistle. Tweet, tweet, tweet! He played it everywhere! In the kitchen - tweet! In his room - tweet! Tweet, tweet, tweet!

But then his big brothers and sisters said, "Oh no, Ben! That whistle costs just one penny. You gave away ALL your pennies! That's too much!"

Ben felt very sad. He cried. He learned something important that day. Sometimes we want something so much that we give up too much to get it.

Do you ever want a toy so much that you might be mean to get it? That's like paying too much for a whistle!

Do you ever want to win a game so much that you might not tell the truth? That's like paying too much for a whistle!

Do you ever want to play so much that you forget to pray or be kind? That's like paying too much for a whistle!

Jesus wants to be the most important thing in our hearts. More important than toys. More important than winning. More important than anything!

Let's pray: Dear Jesus, help us remember that You are the most important. Help us make good choices. Amen.
