Some bowls or other containers used to store leftovers.

Scripture

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. John 6:12 (NIV)

Look at this bowl! We put food in bowls. Sometimes we have extra food. Extra food is called leftovers. Do you eat leftovers? Yummy!

Today we're going to hear about Jesus and lots and lots of people. So many people! They were all hungry. Their tummies were making growling sounds. Grrr! Grrr!

Jesus looked at all the hungry people. He wanted to feed them. But there were SO many people! More people than you can count!

Then a little boy came up. The little boy had lunch in his lunch box. He had five pieces of bread and two little fish. Just five and two! Can you count to five? One, two, three, four, five! Can you count to two? One, two!

The little boy gave his lunch to Jesus. He shared! Sharing is good!

Jesus took the little lunch. He said "Thank you, God!" Then something amazing happened! Jesus made the food grow and grow and grow! There was enough food for everyone!

All the people ate and ate until their tummies were full and happy. Yum, yum, yum!

But guess what? There was still food left over! Twelve whole baskets full of leftovers! That's a lot of leftovers!

Jesus said "Don't waste the food. Pick it all up." So they did!

The little boy shared his lunch and Jesus made it into lots and lots of food! When we share, God is happy! When we share our toys, God is happy! When we share our snacks, God is happy!

Let's pray: Dear God, thank you for food. Help us share like the little boy. Amen.
