Have you ever seen a commercial on TV or YouTube that made you really want something? Maybe it was a toy that looked super cool in the ad, or a snack that promised to make you stronger, or a video game that claimed to be the most amazing thing ever? Companies spend billions of dollars every year trying to convince us to buy their products, and sometimes they don't tell us the whole truth.

Las lecciones de objetos para primaria superior están diseñadas para niños de 10 a 12 años. Ofrecen una versión ampliada del sermón con explicaciones más profundas, preguntas de discusión, conexiones con el mundo real y conceptos más desafiantes.

Let me tell you about some real examples where companies got in big trouble for lying in their advertisements:

  • A chewing gum company said their gum could kill germs in your mouth, like a toothbrush. But when scientists tested it, they found out it didn't work at all! The company had to pay $6 million to people who bought the gum because they believed the lie.
  • A yogurt company claimed their yogurt was scientifically proven to make you healthier. But the studies they used were fake! They had to pay $45 million to customers they tricked.
  • One breakfast cereal company said their cereal would make kids sick less often and help them pay attention in school 20% better. But when the government checked their research, they found out only 1 out of every 9 kids got better, and half the kids saw no change at all!
  • An athletic shoe company claimed their special sneakers would help people burn more calories just by walking. The shoes cost $100, but instead of helping people, many customers got injured wearing them! Now the company might have to pay $5 million in damages.

These examples teach us something important: just because someone says something with confidence, or puts it in a fancy advertisement, doesn't mean it's true. We need to be smart consumers and ask questions like: "Does this sound too good to be true?" "Where's the proof?" "Who is saying this and why should I trust them?"

But here's something even more important than being careful about advertisements - we need to be careful about spiritual teachers too. Jesus knew that throughout history, people would claim to speak for God but would actually be teaching lies. That's why he gave his disciples this serious warning: "Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah.' They will deceive many people."

Jesus continued his warning by explaining that false teachers would try to scare people or get them excited by claiming they knew when the world would end. He said, "You will hear about wars and stories of wars to come. Don't be afraid, these things happen, but the end is not yet here. There will be earthquakes and many people will go hungry, but this is just the beginning." Jesus was telling his disciples that anyone who claims to know exactly when the end times will come is probably not telling the truth.

So how can we tell the difference between true spiritual teachers and false ones? Here are some important tests we can use:

First, compare their teachings to Jesus' teachings in the Bible. True teachers will never contradict what Jesus said. If someone teaches something that goes against Jesus' words about love, forgiveness, serving others, or following God, that's a red flag. For example, if someone says you have to pay money to receive God's love, or that God hates certain people, or that you can earn your way to heaven through good works alone, these teachings don't match what Jesus taught.

Second, look at their character and motives. Jesus said, "By their fruit you will recognize them" (Matthew 7:16). This means we should look at how spiritual leaders live their lives. Do they show love, kindness, humility, and generosity? Or are they greedy for money, power, or fame? Do they serve others or just themselves? True spiritual leaders will have lives that reflect Jesus' character.

Third, pray for wisdom and discernment. God promises to give us wisdom when we ask for it (James 1:5). When you're not sure about a spiritual teacher or teaching, pray and ask God to help you understand what's true. The Holy Spirit will guide you into truth.

Fourth, don't follow spiritual leaders who claim to have special revelations that contradict the Bible. Some false teachers say things like "God told me something new that's not in the Bible" or "I have a special message from God that only I can give you." The Bible contains everything we need to know about God and how to live for Him.

Think about this: Why do you think false spiritual teachers are actually more dangerous than false advertisers? When a company lies about a product, you might waste money or get a product that doesn't work. But when spiritual teachers lie, they can lead people away from God and eternal life. That's why Jesus took this warning so seriously.

Here are some questions to think about: Have you ever believed something that turned out to be false? How did that make you feel? What are some ways you can become better at recognizing truth from lies? Who are the spiritual teachers in your life that you trust, and why do you trust them?

Remember, being a smart Christian doesn't mean being suspicious of everyone - it means being wise and careful about who we listen to and what we believe. God wants us to use our minds and hearts together to follow Him faithfully.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Jesus as our perfect teacher and example. Help us to be wise and discerning when we hear spiritual teachings. Give us hearts that love truth and minds that can recognize lies. Help us to study Your Word so we can know what You really teach, and give us courage to follow Jesus even when others try to lead us away from Him. Protect us from false teachers and help us to be faithful to You all our lives. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
