Scripture

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all." Mark 9:35 (NIV)

Do you know what "upside down" means? It's when things are silly and backwards! Like if your shoes went on your hands, or if you walked on the ceiling! That would be very silly!

Let's pretend! What if dogs said "moo" and cows said "woof woof"? What if we ate with our feet and walked with our hands? So silly!

One day, Jesus was walking with his friends. His friends were being a little grumpy. They were arguing about who was the best. "I'm the best!" "No, I'm the best!" they said.

Jesus heard them arguing. When they got to a house, Jesus asked, "What were you talking about?" His friends felt embarrassed. They didn't want to tell Jesus they were arguing about who was the best.

But Jesus already knew! Jesus said something that sounded upside down and silly to them. He said, "If you want to be first, you have to go to the back of the line! If you want to be big and important, you have to help others!"

Then Jesus called a little child to come over. Jesus gave the child a big hug! He said, "When you are kind to children, you are being kind to me!"

Jesus' friends thought, "This is upside down! Be last to be first? Help others to be important? Children are special too?"

But Jesus loves children SO much! Jesus thinks you are very, very special. You don't have to be big to be important to Jesus. You are important right now!

Jesus wants us to be kind helpers. When we help mommy, when we share our toys, when we give hugs - that makes Jesus happy!

Dear God, thank you for loving children. Thank you for loving us. Help us be kind helpers. We love you, Jesus! Amen.
