Scripture

On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity." Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath." Luke 13:10-14

Look at this spoon! It's all wobbly and bent. Oh no! A bent spoon can't scoop ice cream. A bent spoon can't help us eat soup. This spoon is broken!

Sometimes people get bent too. Not their spoons - their bodies! Some people can't stand up straight. Their backs are bent over. But Jesus loves them!

One day, Jesus was talking to people. He saw a lady who was all bent over. She couldn't stand up tall like you! She had been bent over for a very, very long time. Eighteen years! That's longer than you've been alive!

What did Jesus do? Jesus helped her! Jesus said, "Lady, you are all better now!" Then Jesus touched her gently. And guess what happened? She stood up tall! She was so happy! She said, "Thank you, God! Thank you, Jesus!"

But someone else got very mad. A man was angry that Jesus helped the lady. He said, "Jesus shouldn't help people today!" But that was silly. Jesus loves helping people every day!

Jesus said, "I help people because I love them. Helping people is always good!" Jesus wants us to help people too. When someone needs help, we can help them. That makes Jesus happy!

Jesus loves us. Jesus helps us. We can help others too!

Dear Jesus, thank you for helping people. Help us help others too. Amen.
