Recommended Age:

Lower Elementary

Theme

Jesus cleanses the temple.

Object

A mop, pail, sponges, and other cleaning supplies

Scripture

In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" John 2:14-16 (NIV)

Spring is coming! Spring is when flowers grow and trees get pretty green leaves. Everything looks new and clean!

Look at all these cleaning things! I have a sponge - squish, squish! I have soap bubbles - pop, pop! I have a cloth to wipe things clean. Do you help Mommy and Daddy clean at home? Cleaning makes everything shiny and new!

Jesus went to a very special place called the temple. The temple is God's house where people pray. But when Jesus got there, it was very messy! There were people selling animals - moo cows and baa-baa sheep! There were tables everywhere with money - clink, clank, clink! It was loud and messy in God's house.

Jesus was not happy. God's house should be quiet and clean for praying. So Jesus cleaned up! He told everyone, "This is God's house! It should be clean and quiet!" Jesus made God's house nice again.

Jesus wants to clean our hearts too! When we do something wrong - like not sharing our toys or being mean to our friends - Jesus can make our hearts clean again. We can say "I'm sorry" and Jesus forgives us. Then our hearts are clean and happy!

Let's pray: Dear Jesus, help us keep our hearts clean. When we do wrong things, please forgive us. Thank you for loving us. Amen.
