Theme

Are we worshipping God -- or just going through the motions?

Object

A written copy of your "Order of Worship" or "Worship Guide" (Most churches have one, but may call it different things.)

Scripture

"These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men." Mark 7:6b-7 (NIV)

Look at this paper! (hold up the worship guide) This tells us what we do in church. We sing songs! We pray! We learn about Jesus!

Sometimes grown-ups worry too much about doing things the same way every time. But you know what? God cares more about our hearts than doing everything exactly the same!

One day, Jesus was teaching people. Some grown-ups got upset because Jesus' friends didn't wash their hands before they ate. "That's not how we do it!" they said. They were very worried about washing hands.

But Jesus said something important. He said having a clean heart is more important than having clean hands. Now, we should still wash our hands - that's good! But God cares most about our hearts loving Him.

When we come to church, we sing because we love Jesus! We pray because we love Jesus! We listen because we love Jesus! That's what matters most - not doing everything exactly the same way every time.

God wants our hearts to be happy and love Him. That's the best worship!

Dear God, help us love You with our whole hearts. Help us worship You because we love You. Amen.
