"You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." John 18:37 (NIV)
What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher, a police officer, a lawyer, a doctor, or a nurse? Maybe you want to be a video game designer, an astronaut, or a marine biologist? There are thousands of different careers to choose from, and it can feel overwhelming sometimes! How do we decide what's right for us? Some people choose jobs because they think they'll make lots of money. Others pick careers because they're passionate about helping people - like teachers who love seeing kids learn new things, or doctors who want to heal the sick. Some follow in their parents' footsteps, while others forge completely new paths. Here's something interesting: most adults actually change careers several times in their lives! The job you think you want now might be totally different from what you end up doing. And that's okay - God has a plan for each of us, even when we can't see it yet.

Think about all the amazing things he could have done! He definitely could have been a carpenter - his earthly father Joseph taught him the trade, and Jesus probably knew how to build tables, chairs, and even houses. Can you imagine having furniture made by Jesus himself? He also would have made an incredible doctor. We read about him healing blind people, making paralyzed people walk again, and even bringing people back from the dead! Or maybe he could have been a chef or owned a restaurant - remember when he fed 5,000 people with just five loaves and two fish? And that wedding where he turned water into the best wine anyone had ever tasted? He could have been a fisherman too, since he knew exactly where the fish were hiding and helped his disciples catch more than their boats could hold.
All of those would have been amazing careers for Jesus, but here's the thing - none of them were his real calling. God had a much bigger plan. (Hold up the crown.) Who wears a crown like this? Right - a king or queen! But here's what's different: you can't just decide to become a king. You have to be born into a royal family. It's not a career choice - it's your destiny from birth.
During the final week of Jesus's life, something really important happened. He was arrested and brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate had the power to decide whether Jesus would live or die. During their conversation, Pilate asked Jesus directly: "Are you the king of the Jews?"
Instead of giving a simple yes or no answer, Jesus asked a question back: "Is that your own idea, or did others tell you about me?" Jesus always had a way of making people think deeper about their questions.
Pilate got a bit frustrated and said, "It was your own people who handed you over to me. What have you actually done wrong?"
Then Jesus gave one of the most important explanations of who he really was: "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to defend me and keep me from being arrested. But my kingdom is from another place entirely."
Pilate was still confused, so he asked again: "So you ARE a king then?"
And Jesus gave the clearest answer possible: "You are absolutely right - I am a king. In fact, this is exactly why I was born, and this is why I came into the world."
But Jesus wasn't talking about being an earthly king with a palace, armies, and treasure. He was born to be the King of Heaven - ruler over all creation, over life and death, over sin and salvation. His kingdom isn't limited by borders or time. It's eternal, and it's available to anyone who believes in him. Right now, Jesus is sitting on his throne in heaven, but one day he's coming back to earth as the King of Kings. And here's the amazing part - if we follow Jesus, we get to be part of his royal family forever!
