Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed by everything you need to do? Maybe you have homework due, chores to finish, sports practice, and friends asking you to hang out all at the same time. That's exactly why many successful people use To-Do lists - they help us organize our thoughts and make sure we don't forget important things. Let me show you what a typical To-Do list for someone your age might look like:

  • Make my bed and organize my room
  • Complete math homework and study for science test
  • Practice piano for 30 minutes
  • Help mom with grocery shopping
  • Text friends about weekend plans
  • Clean up after dinner
  • Finish reading chapter for book report
  • Walk the dog
  • Play video games
  • Watch YouTube videos

Here's something interesting about this list - and something you've probably experienced yourself. When we look at our To-Do list, we naturally want to do the fun, easy things first. It's called "procrastination," and even adults struggle with it! We might spend an hour on YouTube instead of studying for that science test, or text friends instead of doing chores. But here's the problem: not everything on our list is equally important. Some things have serious consequences if we don't do them, while others are just for fun.

This exact situation happened when Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem with his disciples. Three different men approached him with different attitudes about following him. The first man was super enthusiastic and said, "I will follow you wherever you go!" But Jesus wanted him to understand the reality of discipleship. He said, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." Jesus wasn't trying to discourage him - he was being honest that following God isn't always comfortable or easy.

The second man had a different response when Jesus said "Follow me." He said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." Now, this sounds reasonable, right? Taking care of family is important. But Jesus understood that this man was making excuses. In that culture, "burying my father" often meant "let me wait until my father dies and I receive my inheritance" - which could be years away! The man was essentially saying, "I'll follow you someday, but not right now."

The third man said, "Lord, I will follow you, but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family." Again, this seems polite and reasonable. But Jesus responded, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." When farmers plow fields, they have to keep their eyes focused ahead to make straight rows. If they keep looking back, the rows become crooked and useless.

So what does this mean for us today? Jesus isn't saying we shouldn't care about our families or responsibilities. Instead, he's teaching us about priorities. Think about it this way: if following Jesus is the most important thing in our lives, then everything else we do should flow from that decision. When we put God first, it actually helps us handle our other responsibilities better.

Here are some questions to think about: What would it look like to put following Jesus at the top of your To-Do list? How might your daily choices change if you remembered that you're a follower of Christ? When you're deciding between hanging out with friends who make good choices versus friends who pressure you to do wrong things, which choice honors God? When you have to choose between sleeping in on Sunday or going to church, what does putting God first look like?

This doesn't mean life becomes boring or that you can't have fun. Actually, when we follow God's design for our lives, we often find more joy and purpose than we expected. But it does mean that sometimes we'll have to make difficult choices, just like those men who wanted to follow Jesus.

The truth is, we all have things that compete for the number one spot in our lives - sports, grades, popularity, money, entertainment, or even good things like family. But Jesus is asking us to examine our hearts and honestly ask: "What's really most important to me?" Because whatever we put first will shape every other decision we make.

Let's remember that following Jesus isn't just about going to church on Sundays or saying a prayer before meals. It's about letting God guide our choices, treating others with love and respect, being honest even when it's hard, and trusting God's plan even when we don't understand it. That's what it means to keep first things first.

Heavenly Father, help us to be honest about what's really most important in our lives. We know that following Jesus isn't always the easiest choice, but we also know it's the most important one. Give us wisdom to make good decisions and courage to put you first, even when our friends or our culture tells us to choose something else. Help us remember that when we follow you, everything else in our lives can find its proper place. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
