A "Thank You" card

"Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. Luke 8:39 (NIV)
What do you do when someone does something nice for you? Well, the most important thing you should do when someone does something nice for you is to say, "Thank you." At our house, we always keep a good supply of thank you cards so that we will not forget. I hope you will always remember to say, "Thank you" when someone does something nice for you. Another thing you should do is to tell others about the nice things that person has done for you.

But here's something to think about: Why is it sometimes hard to remember to say thank you? Maybe we get busy, or maybe we start thinking we deserve good things. Sometimes we might even feel embarrassed about needing help. Have you ever noticed that it's easier to remember when someone hurts your feelings than when they do something kind? Our brains are wired to remember negative things more than positive ones, which is why we have to work extra hard at gratitude.
Jesus spent his life on earth doing good things for people. He was loving, kind, and compassionate. The Bible tells us that he came not to be served, but to serve others and to give his life for them. Wherever Jesus went, he healed the sick and the lame. He gave sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf. Why, he even raised some from the dead! Sometimes the people remembered to say, "Thank you" and sometimes they forgot.
Think about this for a moment: Jesus had the power to do anything he wanted. He could have lived in a palace, commanded armies, or forced people to worship him. Instead, he chose to spend his time helping people who couldn't help themselves. He touched people with diseases that made others afraid to come near them. He ate with people that society had rejected. This wasn't just being nice—this was revolutionary love that changed everything.
In our Bible lesson today, Jesus met a man who was controlled by evil spirits. This wasn't like the scary movies you might see—this was real spiritual warfare. The man had not worn clothes for a long time and he did not live in a house, but spent his days and nights roaming among the tombs and in the mountains. Imagine how lonely and frightening that must have been, not just for him, but for his family who probably remembered when he was healthy and normal. People in the town where he lived were afraid of him and tried to bind him with chains, but he was so strong that he broke the chains.
Here's what's important to understand: this man didn't choose to be this way. Evil had taken control of his life, and he was trapped. Sometimes in our world today, we see people struggling with things beyond their control—mental illness, addiction, or terrible circumstances. It's easy to judge or be afraid, but Jesus shows us a different way to respond.
Jesus saw that the man was tormented and he felt compassion for him. The word "compassion" means more than just feeling sorry for someone—it means feeling their pain so deeply that you're moved to action. There was a large herd of pigs on the hillside nearby, so Jesus let the evil spirits enter into the pigs, and the entire herd ran into the lake and drowned.
Now you might wonder, "Why did Jesus let the pigs die? Wasn't that mean to the pig farmers?" This shows us something important about how much Jesus values human life. Those pigs were worth a lot of money, but one human soul was worth more than all of them combined. Jesus was willing to let property be destroyed to save a person. What does that tell you about how much God values you?
After Jesus freed the man from the evil spirits, he was like a different person. People saw the man sitting at Jesus' feet, fully clothed and speaking calmly. Can you imagine the shock of the townspeople? This man they had feared and chained up was now peaceful and rational. He was so happy that he wanted to go with Jesus and follow him wherever he went, but Jesus told the man to go back to his home and tell everyone what God had done for him.
Here's where the story gets really interesting: Jesus didn't let the man become his traveling companion. Instead, he gave him a mission. Sometimes we think following Jesus means leaving everything behind and becoming a missionary in another country. But Jesus told this man that his mission field was right at home, with the very people who had rejected him. That takes incredible courage, doesn't it?
The Bible tells us that the man went back and told all the people in the city what great things Jesus had done for him. Think about how powerful his testimony must have been. These people knew exactly what he used to be like. They couldn't deny the change they saw. His life became living proof of Jesus' power.
You and I should always remember to give thanks for all that Jesus has done for us. The greatest gift we have ever received is the gift of eternal life. Jesus made this gift possible by his death on the cross. But let's think deeper about this: eternal life isn't just about living forever in heaven someday. It's about having a relationship with God that starts right now and changes how we live today.
We should also tell others what he has done for us so that they might come to know that he loves them too. But here's a challenge for you: How do you tell others about Jesus without sounding weird or pushy? Sometimes the most powerful testimony isn't what we say, but how we live. When people see us showing kindness to someone who's being bullied, or choosing honesty when we could lie and get away with it, or forgiving someone who hurt us—that's when they start asking questions about what makes us different.
Think about these questions: Who in your life needs to see Jesus' love through your actions? Is there someone at school who feels like an outcast, the way that man with the evil spirits was an outcast? How can you show them the same compassion Jesus showed? And when good things happen in your life, do you remember to thank God and tell others about his goodness?
Remember, gratitude isn't just good manners—it's a way of recognizing that everything good in our lives comes from God. When we practice gratitude and share our stories of God's goodness, we become like that healed man, living proof of Jesus' power to change lives.
Our Father, we thank you for all that you have done for us. We are especially thankful for the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, your son. Help us to always show our gratitude and tell others how much you have done for us. Give us courage to share your love with people who feel rejected or afraid, just like that man in the tombs. Help us to see others the way you see them—as precious souls worth saving. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
