"So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him." Luke 15:20 (NLT)
Have you ever wondered if God still loves you after you've messed up? Maybe you cheated on a test, said something mean to hurt someone's feelings, or made a choice you knew was wrong. Sometimes we might think God's love works like a light switch - on when we're good, off when we're bad. But that's not how God's love works at all.

Jesus told an incredible story to help us understand God's amazing love. It's about a wealthy man who had two sons. The younger son made a shocking request - he asked his father for his inheritance money right away. In those days, this was like saying "I wish you were dead, Dad!" But amazingly, the father gave him the money anyway.
The son took everything and moved far from home. He thought freedom meant doing whatever he wanted - partying, buying expensive things, hanging out with people who only cared about his money. But when his cash ran out, so did his so-called friends. He ended up so desperate he took a job feeding pigs - the most humiliating job for someone from his culture. He was so hungry he wanted to eat the pig food!
Think about this: Have you ever made choices that seemed fun at first but led to trouble? Maybe lying to avoid consequences, but then having to tell more lies? Or choosing friends who pressured you to do things you knew were wrong? The son learned that real freedom isn't doing whatever you want - it's making good choices that lead to good outcomes.
Finally, the son realized he'd hit rock bottom. He remembered how even his father's servants were treated better than he was treating himself. So he practiced a speech: "Father, I've sinned against you and God. I don't deserve to be your son anymore. Please just let me work as your servant."
But here's the most amazing part of the story - while the son was still far away, his father saw him coming and ran to meet him! In that culture, wealthy men never ran - it wasn't dignified. But this father didn't care about dignity. He cared about his son. He hugged him and kissed him before the son could even finish his apology speech.
Instead of punishment, the father threw a huge party! He gave his son the best robe (showing he was still part of the family), a ring (giving him authority), and sandals (proving he wasn't a servant). They killed the fattened calf - the most expensive celebration meal possible.
Now, the older brother got angry. He'd been the "good kid" all along, following rules and working hard. When he heard the party, he refused to join. His father came out to talk to him too. The older son complained: "I've been perfect for years, and you never threw me a party! But my brother wastes everything and gets a celebration?"
The father's response teaches us something important: "Son, everything I have is yours. You've always been with me. But we had to celebrate because your brother was dead to us and is now alive. He was lost, but now he's found!"
This story shows us two important truths about God's love. First, like the younger son, when we mess up and turn back to God, He doesn't just forgive us - He celebrates! God doesn't love us because we're perfect. He loves us because we're His children. Second, like the older son, sometimes we can follow all the rules but miss the heart of God's love. God doesn't want us to obey Him just to earn His love - He wants us to obey because we already have His love.
Here's what this means for your life: When you make mistakes, don't run away from God or try to hide your sin. Run TO God, just like the younger son ran home. And when others mess up, don't be like the older brother, keeping score of who deserves what. Instead, celebrate when people turn back to God.
God's love isn't something you earn by being good enough or lose by making mistakes. It's a gift that never changes, no matter what you do. That's the kind of Father our God is - always watching for us to come home, always ready to celebrate our return.
Father, thank you that your love never fails and never changes. Help us remember that we don't have to be perfect to be loved by you. When we mess up, help us run to you, not away from you. And help us show that same kind of love and forgiveness to others. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
