Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. John 14:23 (NIV)
Can anyone guess who this is in this picture? It is my mother. My mother is in heaven with Jesus now, but I still think of her often. I loved my mother very much and I know that she liked to hear me say, "Mom, I love you!" Do you think your mother likes to hear you tell her that you love her? Of course she does! But here's something really important to understand: your mother likes it even more when you show her that you love her through your actions.

Think about it this way - words are important, but actions prove what's really in your heart. It's like when your friend says they'll help you with something but then doesn't show up. Their words didn't match their actions, right? The same thing happens with love. We can say "I love you" all day long, but if our actions don't show it, those words don't mean very much.
How can you show your mother that you love her? Well, I made up a list of what I think might be the top ten ways to show your mother that you love her. As I read these, think about which ones you're already doing well and which ones you could work on:
- Make your bed without being asked
- Pick up your clothes and put them where they belong
- Keep your room organized and clean
- Take out the trash and help with other chores
- Help her prepare meals and clean up afterward
- Set the table nicely for family meals
- Help with the dishes without complaining
- Get along peacefully with your brothers and sisters
- Create thoughtful, homemade gifts that show you put time and effort into them
- Obey her instructions the first time, with a good attitude
Now let me ask you some questions to think about: Which of these is hardest for you? Why do you think obeying right away shows love better than arguing first and then obeying? When you do these things, how does it make your mom feel? How does it make you feel?
Here's the deeper truth: when we show love through our actions, it actually changes us too. Every time you choose to help instead of complain, or obey instead of argue, you're building good character. You're becoming the kind of person who thinks about others before yourself.
Now, do you love Jesus? I'm sure you do. Do you think Jesus likes to hear you say, "I love you?" I know He does. But just like with your mom, He likes it even better when you show Him that you love Him through your actions. How do you do that? Jesus told us exactly how in John 14:23 when He said, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teachings."
But what does it really mean to obey Jesus' teachings? It's not just about following a bunch of rules. Jesus taught us to love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves. He taught us to forgive people who hurt us, to be kind to those who are different from us, and to help people who are in need. He taught us to tell the truth, to be generous with what we have, and to treat others the way we want to be treated.
Think about your everyday life at school, at home, and with your friends. When someone is being picked on, do you stand up for them or just walk away? When you find money that someone dropped, do you try to return it or keep it? When your parents ask you to do something, do you do it with a good attitude or do you grumble and complain? These are all ways you can show Jesus you love Him.
Here's something cool to think about: when you show love through obedience, you're actually becoming more like Jesus. Every time you choose to do the right thing, even when it's hard, you're growing stronger in your faith. It's like exercise for your soul!
Sometimes obeying Jesus' teachings is really challenging. Maybe someone at school is mean to you, and Jesus says to love your enemies. That's hard! Maybe you really want something that belongs to someone else, and Jesus says not to covet. That's tough too! But remember, God gives us strength to do what's right, and He's always there to help us when we mess up.
When you leave here today, don't forget to tell your mom that you love her, but more importantly, show her that you love her through your actions. Look for specific ways this week to demonstrate your love - maybe by doing extra chores without being asked, or by being extra patient with your siblings. As we worship today, tell Jesus that you love Him, but more importantly, remember to show Him that you love Him by living out His teachings every single day. Remember, it's not about being perfect - it's about trying your best and letting God help you grow.
Dear Lord, we have come to your house today to say, "I love you." Help us to go out of here today and show you that we love you by obeying your teachings. Give us strength when it's hard to do the right thing, and help us to remember that our actions show what's really in our hearts. Help us to love others the way you love us. Amen.
