Exodus 20:2-3

Summary of this sermon...

There is no substitute for God, just like how sugar substitutes can't replace real sugar. We may try to fill our lives with material things, but only God can truly comfort and satisfy us. He is the real thing, and we shouldn't settle for anything less. (Exodus 20:2-3) This lesson teaches kids that God is unique and cannot be replaced by anything else, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing Him in their lives.

How many of you like the dark? I don’t especially like it. I live in the country and it is really dark sometimes. If I come home after dark, or when I go to work in the mornings, and there is no light on, I cannot see where I am walking. I am afraid I will either step on something (like a snake or a frog) or trip over something and fall. Animals can see well in the dark, but people don’t see as well in the dark. You can get night vision goggles, or you can do like I do and carry a flashlight.

These are all called sugar substitutes. We use them to make our food sweeter and better. They are close but they are definitely not sugar.

It is that way with God. There is only one God and nothing can take his place. Nothing comes close. God comforts us and makes our lives sweet.

People try to substitute a lot of stuff for God. It may be new cars, new toys, new clothes, or new games. And all that stuff can make us feel good for a while, but only God can satisfy us and make our lives sweet.

He is the real thing, don’t settle for anything less.
