But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. John 16:13 (NIV)
How many of you have ever used a GPS or seen your parents use one? GPS stands for Global Positioning System, and it's like having a super-smart friend in your car or phone who knows every road in the world! When your family wants to go somewhere new, you type in the address, and the GPS creates a perfect route just for you. But here's the really cool part - the GPS connects to satellites way up in space, about 12,000 miles above Earth! These satellites are constantly sending signals back and forth, and your GPS uses at least four different satellites to figure out exactly where you are and where you need to go.

But wait, it gets even more amazing! What happens if you miss a turn or take the wrong exit? Does the GPS give up on you? No way! It immediately recalculates and says "Recalculating route" and finds you a new path. It doesn't get frustrated or angry - it just keeps helping you reach your destination. The GPS also tells you your speed, how many miles are left, what time you'll arrive, and even warns you about traffic jams ahead!
Now think about this: if we have this incredible technology to help us navigate roads and highways, don't you think God would give us something even better to help us navigate life? And He has! God has given us a spiritual GPS system, and it's called the Holy Spirit. Just like a regular GPS needs satellites to work, our spiritual GPS - the Holy Spirit - stays connected to God in heaven and helps guide our decisions every single day.
But here's something important to remember: just like a GPS needs an accurate map to work properly, the Holy Spirit uses God's Word - the Bible - as His perfect map for our lives. The Bible isn't just an old book; it's like God's instruction manual for living. It shows us the difference between right and wrong, helps us understand how to treat others, and teaches us about God's love for us.
Now, you're getting older and you're going to face more complicated decisions than when you were little. Some of your friends might try to convince you to make choices based on how you feel in the moment. But think about this - how reliable are your feelings? If you're hungry, you might feel like eating candy for every meal. If you're angry at your little brother, you might feel like being mean to him. Our feelings change all the time, sometimes even within the same hour! That's why feelings alone can't be trusted to guide our most important decisions.
Other people might tell you, "Everyone else is doing it, so it must be okay." But is that really good logic? If everyone in your class decided to jump off the school roof, would that make it safe? Of course not! Just because something is popular doesn't make it right. Trends change, friends change schools, and what's "cool" today might be embarrassing tomorrow.
This is why Jesus knew we'd need something much more reliable than our feelings or what other people do. Before Jesus returned to heaven, He made an amazing promise. He said God would send the Holy Spirit to be our helper, teacher, and guide. In John 16:13, Jesus said the Holy Spirit would "guide you into all truth." That means the Holy Spirit helps us understand what the Bible teaches and shows us how to apply it to real situations in our lives.
Let me give you some examples of how this works. Maybe you find a wallet with money in it at school. Your feelings might say "Keep it - no one will know!" Your friends might say "Finders keepers!" But when you pray and think about what the Bible teaches about honesty and treating others the way you want to be treated, the Holy Spirit helps you realize the right thing is to turn it in to the office. Or maybe someone is spreading rumors about a classmate, and everyone is joining in. The Holy Spirit might remind you of Bible verses about being kind and not gossiping, even when it's hard to stand up for someone.
Jesus said something incredible in John 14:6 - He said "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Just like a GPS always points you toward your destination, the Holy Spirit always points us toward Jesus. When we follow Jesus' example of love, kindness, forgiveness, and truth, we're heading in the right direction no matter what situation we face.
Think about it this way: I wouldn't dream of taking a road trip to a place I've never been without a GPS to guide me. I'd probably get lost, waste time, and end up frustrated. In the same way, I can't imagine trying to navigate through life - with all its choices, challenges, and changes - without the Holy Spirit as my guide. Whenever I'm confused about what to do, I can pray, read God's Word, and trust the Holy Spirit to show me the right path.
The best part is that unlike a phone GPS that might lose signal or run out of battery, the Holy Spirit is always available, always accurate, and never gives up on us. When we make mistakes and go the wrong direction, He doesn't abandon us - He helps us get back on track, just like when a GPS recalculates your route.
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit as our guide through life. Help us to trust Him more than our feelings or what others might say. Teach us to read Your Word and understand it better, so we can make choices that honor You. When we face tough decisions, remind us to pray and listen for Your guidance. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
