One, two, three, four. (Point to the calendar as you count off the Sundays in January.) Today is the fourth Sunday of the new year. Wow, time really does fly by! I bet many of you made New Year's resolutions – those special promises we make to ourselves about how we want to grow and change. Maybe you promised to keep your room cleaner, be kinder to your siblings, read more books, or help out more at home. Turn to someone near you and share one resolution you made. How's it going so far? Be honest – keeping promises to ourselves can be really tough!

Here's a question that might make you think: Why do you think it's so hard sometimes to keep our promises? (Pause for responses.) You're right – sometimes we forget, sometimes we get lazy, or sometimes we realize we promised something that was harder than we thought. But here's what's amazing about God – He never has this problem. God always, always keeps His promises, and there are some pretty incredible reasons why.

The Bible teaches us three important truths about God's promises. First, God cannot lie – it's literally impossible for Him (Titus 1:2, Hebrews 6:18). Think about that – you and I sometimes tell little white lies or exaggerate stories, but God's character makes lying impossible for Him. Second, not one of God's promises has ever failed – not even one! (Joshua 23:14) Imagine if you had a friend who kept every single promise they ever made to you. That's God! Third, God is completely faithful (Hebrews 11:11), which means He's trustworthy and reliable in ways that even the best human friends can't match.

Now let's dive into today's Bible story. Jesus had grown up in Nazareth, and like any good Jewish boy, he regularly attended synagogue. But this particular day was different. When it was time for someone to read from the scriptures, Jesus stood up. The synagogue attendant handed him the scroll of Isaiah – imagine unrolling a long piece of parchment with beautiful Hebrew writing on it. Jesus found a very specific passage and read these powerful words:

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

Now here's where it gets really interesting. After Jesus finished reading, he carefully rolled up the scroll, handed it back, and sat down. Everyone in that synagogue was staring at him, waiting to hear what he would say about this ancient prophecy. And then Jesus said something that probably made everyone's jaw drop: "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

Do you understand what Jesus was saying? He was telling them, "I am the one Isaiah was talking about! I am God's promise come true!" You see, for hundreds of years, God's people had been waiting for the Messiah – the special one God promised to send. And here was Jesus, standing right in front of people who had watched him grow up, declaring that He was the fulfillment of that ancient promise.

Think about this: God made this promise about the Messiah over 700 years before Jesus was born. That's like making a promise today that wouldn't be fulfilled until the year 2700! But God kept His word perfectly. Jesus came to bring good news to people who felt hopeless, to free people trapped by sin, to heal those who couldn't see (both physically and spiritually), and to announce that God's favor was available to everyone.

Here's a discussion question for you: If God keeps all His promises, what promises has He made to you and me? (Allow responses.) That's right – He promises to forgive our sins when we ask, to never leave us, to give us eternal life, to help us through difficult times, and so much more. These aren't just nice ideas – they're guaranteed promises from a God who has never broken His word.

So as we think about our own New Year's resolutions and promises, let's remember that while we might struggle to keep our word sometimes, we serve a God whose promises are rock-solid. When we mess up, we can trust His promise of forgiveness. When we're scared, we can trust His promise to be with us. When we wonder about the future, we can trust His promise to work all things together for good for those who love Him.

Our Father, we are amazed by your faithfulness in keeping every single promise you've ever made. Thank you for sending Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of your promise to save us. Help us to be people who keep our word, just like you do. When we fail, remind us that your promises of love and forgiveness never fail. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
