Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Hebrews 12:1-2 (NLT)
These medals remind me of something amazing happening right now - the Olympics! You've probably watched some events on TV or heard about incredible athletes breaking records. Let's talk about just how massive the Olympics really are, because the numbers will blow your mind:

- Over 10,500 athletes from around the world compete - that's like filling up 200 school gymnasiums with just the competitors!
- Athletes represent 206 different countries - nearly every nation on Earth sends their best
- More than 6 million people buy tickets to watch in person
- There are 6,500 hours of TV coverage - if you watched non-stop, that would take you 9 months!
- About 4 billion people watch at least some of the Olympics - that's more than half of everyone alive on planet Earth!
Think about what it takes for these athletes to get there. They've been training since they were probably your age or younger. They wake up at 5 AM to practice. They eat special diets. They give up hanging out with friends sometimes to train. They've probably failed hundreds of times, gotten injured, and wanted to quit. But they kept going because they had their eyes on the prize - that gold medal and the chance to be called the best in the world.
But here's what's really cool - our Bible lesson today talks about a race that's even more important than the Olympics. Listen to what it says: "Since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses, let us run the race that God has set before us. Throw aside anything that will slow you down. Keep your eyes on Jesus."
So what is this race we're running? It's not a sprint or a marathon you can finish in a few hours. It's the lifelong race of following Jesus and becoming more like Him every single day. Just like Olympic athletes have to train their bodies, we have to train our hearts and minds to make choices that honor God - even when it's hard, even when our friends make fun of us, even when we really want to do something we know is wrong.
Think about it this way - Olympic athletes throw off heavy clothes that would slow them down. In our spiritual race, we need to throw off things like selfishness, lying, being mean to others, or anything else that keeps us from running well for Jesus. What are some things that might slow you down in following Jesus? Maybe it's choosing to watch something inappropriate, or being dishonest with your parents, or excluding someone at school because they're different.
Here's a question for you to think about: If an Olympic runner was just 10 feet from the finish line with a gold medal waiting, would they suddenly stop and give up? Of course not! That would be crazy! But sometimes in our Christian life, when things get tough or following Jesus feels hard, we're tempted to give up. The Bible reminds us to never quit, to keep our eyes on Jesus, and like the apostle Paul said, "Press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
The amazing thing is that unlike the Olympics where only three people get medals in each event, in God's race, everyone who finishes wins! God isn't looking for you to be perfect - He's looking for you to keep trying, keep growing, and keep following Jesus even when you mess up.
So here's your challenge this week: Think like an Olympic athlete training for the most important competition of their life. What's one thing you can "throw off" that's been slowing you down in following Jesus? What's one way you can train your heart to be more like Him? Remember, you're not running this race alone - you have the Holy Spirit helping you, other Christians cheering you on, and Jesus Himself showing you the way.
Father, help us run this lifelong race with determination and joy. When we're tempted to give up or take shortcuts, remind us to keep our eyes on Jesus. Help us throw off anything that slows us down from following You wholeheartedly. Give us strength to train our hearts daily to be more like Jesus, and help us encourage others who are running this race alongside us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
