In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all. Isaiah 11:6 (NLT)
Look at this amazing picture. (Hold up a print of "The Peaceable Kingdom".) This isn't just any ordinary painting - it shows something that seems completely impossible in our world. Study it carefully and see what catches your attention.

What jumps out at you as totally unrealistic or impossible? (Give the children time to respond and discuss their observations.)
Let's identify everything we see here. (Point to each animal and person as you name them.) There's a fierce lion with its powerful jaws, a striped tiger with razor-sharp claws, a gentle lamb, a peaceful cow, a spotted leopard that's built for hunting, and a gray wolf with its pack-hunting instincts. But here's what's incredible - there are small children in this scene, and one is actually petting these dangerous predators like they're friendly house cats!
Think about what you know from nature documentaries or the zoo. Have you ever seen natural enemies like wolves and lambs just hanging out together peacefully? What would happen if you walked up to a wild lion or tiger in real life? These are apex predators - animals designed to hunt and kill other animals for survival. Yet in this painting, they're all resting together like old friends at a sleepover.
This masterpiece was created by an American artist named Edward Hicks in the 1800s. He called it "The Peaceable Kingdom," and here's the fascinating part - he didn't just imagine this scene. He got his inspiration directly from God's Word. In Isaiah chapter 11, verses 6-7, the prophet Isaiah writes: "The wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all. The cow will graze near the bear. The cub and the calf will lie down together. The lion will eat hay like a cow."
Now here's a question that requires some serious thinking: Who do you believe this "little child" is that Isaiah prophesied would lead all these natural enemies into perfect harmony? (Allow discussion.) Exactly right! Isaiah was prophesying about Jesus Christ, who would come as the ultimate Peacemaker.
During this Advent season, we're not just remembering a baby born in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. We're celebrating that Jesus came as the Prince of Peace to transform our broken world. But here's what's really exciting - Isaiah's prophecy has two parts. Jesus already came once as a baby, but He promised to return again. When He comes back, He will establish His perfect kingdom where there will be no more conflict, no more fear, and no more enemies.
Think about the conflicts in your own life. Maybe you have trouble getting along with a sibling who always annoys you, or there's someone at school who seems to be your enemy. Jesus wants to bring that same peaceable kingdom into your relationships right now. He calls us to be peacemakers in our families, our schools, and our communities - showing others what His kingdom looks like even before He returns.
Let us pray together.
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus as our Prince of Peace. Help us to be peacemakers in our world, even when it's difficult to get along with others. We praise You as we celebrate Christ's first coming, and we eagerly await His return when Your perfect peaceable kingdom will be established forever. Give us wisdom to live as Your children should, bringing Your peace wherever we go. In Jesus' mighty name we pray. Amen.
