Sermon
Making Excuses (Preschool Adaptation)
Recommended Age:
Lower Elementary
Theme
Jesus said, "Follow me." What's your excuse?
Object
Write the excuses listed in the lesson on note paper and fold them as if they were actual notes from parents. (This also allows you to read the notes rather than trying to remember the excuses.)
Scripture
As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good bye to my family." Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." Luke 9:57-62 (NIV)
Activities + Resources
Have you ever been sick and couldn't go to school? When you're sick, your mommy or daddy tells your teacher why you couldn't come. Sometimes people say funny things!
One mommy wrote: "My little boy was sleeping so deep, I couldn't find him under his blankets!"
Another daddy wrote: "My little girl felt yucky, but then she felt better!"
These are silly, aren't they?
Long, long ago, Jesus was walking down the road. Jesus saw some grown-ups and said, "Come follow me!"
One man said, "I want to follow you, Jesus, but first I need to go home."
Another man said, "I want to follow you, Jesus, but first I need to say bye-bye to my family."
Jesus was sad. The men were making excuses. They weren't ready to follow Jesus right away.
Jesus wants us to follow Him too! When Jesus calls us, we should say "Yes, Jesus!" right away. No excuses!
Following Jesus means being kind. Following Jesus means sharing our toys. Following Jesus means loving others.
Will you follow Jesus? Let's all say "Yes, Jesus!"
Dear Jesus, help us follow you every day. Help us be kind and loving. We want to follow you! Amen.

I loved this lesson -- so easy to prepare and the message was very approachable for kids. My favorite part was the Interactive Bible Experience.
