Sermon

We Serve Like Jesus (Preschool Adaptation)

Recommended Age:

Lower Elementary

Theme

We serve others to live like Jesus.

Object

A chicken wishbone (alternative: a branch resembling a wishbone)

Scripture

Mark 10:35-45

Do you know what a wishbone is? It's a special bone from a chicken! Two people hold it and pull. Crack! The person with the bigger piece gets their wish! That sounds fun, doesn't it?

What do you wish for? Ice cream? Toys? A puppy? We all have wishes!

Sometimes we wish for things without thinking. Like wishing it would stop raining so we can play outside. But what if it NEVER rained again? The flowers would be thirsty! The trees would be sad! We need rain to help things grow!

Jesus had friends named James and John. They were brothers, just like some of you might be! One day, they came to Jesus with a big wish.

"Jesus!" they said. "We want to sit right next to you when you're the king! We want to be super important!"

But Jesus said, "You don't understand what you're asking for." Jesus taught them something very important. He said, "If you want to be great, you need to help others. You need to be a helper!"

Jesus was the best helper ever! He helped everyone - sick people, sad people, hungry people. Jesus came to help us all!

Sometimes we might say, "I wish I could be like Jesus!" That's a wonderful wish! But being like Jesus means being a helper too. We can help mommy and daddy. We can share our toys. We can be kind to our friends.

Let's pray: Dear God, help us be good helpers like Jesus. Help us share and be kind every day. Thank you for Jesus! Amen.
