A few days later Mary hurried to the hill country of Judea, to the town where Zechariah lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth. At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:39-41 NIV
Today is the last Sunday before Christmas! I know you're probably super excited – maybe you've been counting down the days or checking your advent calendar every morning. But let's think beyond just the presents for a minute. What are some of your favorite Christmas traditions? Maybe your family has special foods you only eat at Christmas, or you go caroling, or you have a particular way you decorate your tree? (Give children time to share their traditions.)

When I was growing up, my favorite part wasn't even the presents. It was when our whole extended family would gather at my grandmother's house. Cousins I hadn't seen all year, aunts and uncles with their funny stories, and SO much food! But you know what made it really special? We were all there because we were celebrating Jesus' birth together. Family gatherings at Christmas aren't just nice – they're actually following a pattern that started way back in the very first Christmas story.
Let's dive into what happened right after the angel Gabriel visited Mary. Picture this: You're a teenage girl, probably about 14 or 15 years old, engaged to marry a carpenter named Joseph. Suddenly an angel appears and tells you that God has chosen YOU to be the mother of the Messiah – the Savior the Jewish people had been waiting for hundreds and hundreds of years! How would you feel? Scared? Confused? Excited? Overwhelmed? Probably all of those things at once!
But here's what's amazing about Mary – after she said yes to God's plan, she didn't just sit around wondering what to do next. The Bible says she "hurried" to visit her relative Elizabeth. Why do you think she went to Elizabeth specifically? Well, the angel had told Mary that Elizabeth was also having a miracle baby – she was old and had never been able to have children before, but God was giving her a son who would grow up to be John the Baptist.
Now here's where the story gets really incredible. When Mary walked up to Elizabeth's house and called out a greeting, something supernatural happened. Elizabeth's baby – who wasn't even born yet – jumped inside her womb! And immediately, Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she KNEW, without Mary telling her anything, that Mary was carrying the Messiah.
Elizabeth shouted with joy: "God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed!" Think about this – Elizabeth recognized that Mary's baby was special before Mary even mentioned being pregnant! Then Elizabeth said something that shows how humble and amazed she was: "Why am I so blessed that the mother of my Lord would visit me?" She called Mary's unborn baby "my Lord" – she knew this baby was God himself!
But here's my favorite part of what Elizabeth said: "You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said." Mary had faith. Even though God's plan seemed impossible and scary, she trusted Him. That's the kind of faith God wants from us too.
So think about this: The very first Christmas celebration wasn't around a Christmas tree or with presents. It was two women, both carrying miracle babies, sharing their joy and amazement at what God was doing. They were family supporting each other through something incredible and life-changing.
This teaches us something important about Christmas today. Yes, presents are fun, and decorations are beautiful, but the heart of Christmas is about celebrating God's greatest gift – Jesus – together with the people we love. When your family gathers this Christmas, you're doing exactly what Mary and Elizabeth did. You're sharing the joy of Jesus' birth with people who matter to you.
Here's a challenge for you this Christmas: Look for ways to make Jesus the center of your family celebrations. Maybe you could suggest reading the Christmas story together, or talk about what Jesus' birth means to your family, or find ways to serve others together. How can you help your family remember that we're not just having a party – we're celebrating the birthday of our Savior?
Heavenly Father, thank you for showing us through Mary and Elizabeth that celebrating Jesus is something we do best when we're together with family and friends. Help us this Christmas to focus on the real reason we celebrate – because you sent your Son to save us. Help us to have faith like Mary, joy like Elizabeth, and hearts that are excited to share the good news of Jesus with others. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
